Safety considerations

Oral garlic has been used safely in studies up to 7 years; side effects include breath and body odor, abdominal pain, flatulence, nausea and allergic reactions; supplements may increase bleeding risk, especially before surgery or with anticoagulants or aspirin; may not be safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding in amounts greater than food; fresh raw garlic may not be safe applied topically, causing severe skin irritation and chemical burns, while some topical forms seem safe.
