About

Essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) Cheel, Myrtaceae; the EMA scope also includes M. linariifolia, M. dissitiflora and other Melaleuca species. NCCIH covers M. alternifolia specifically.

Forms and distinctions

Different preparations of the same material are described separately, because what is recorded for one form does not carry to another.

Essential oil obtained by steam distillation of leaves and terminal branches only.

Safety considerations

Tea tree oil should not be swallowed; oral intake can cause serious symptoms such as confusion, unsteadiness, inability to walk and coma; topical use may cause redness or irritation, more likely if the product is old or exposed to heat, light or air. Skin reactions including pain, itching, burning, irritation, stinging, redness and swelling, and allergic reactions, are reported with frequency unknown; rare burn-like skin reactions are recorded.
