About

Valeriana officinalis, Caprifoliaceae.

Forms and distinctions

Different preparations of the same material are described separately, because what is recorded for one form does not carry to another.

EMA material distinguishes oral herbal preparations including extract and herbal tea forms; posology content was deliberately not imported.

Safety considerations

Generally safe short term for most adults; long-term safety unknown. Reported adverse effects include headache, stomach upset, mental dullness, excitability, uneasiness and vivid dreams; withdrawal symptoms can occur after chronic use; rare liver injury has been reported, usually in products containing other herbals; safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is little known; avoid combining with alcohol or sedatives because of a possible additive sleep-inducing effect.
